Good morning, I am hoping that by the end of this week all children will have their workbooks distributed to them. I am giving each child another copybook for when you run out of pages and the remaining Starlight readers. When I am assigning work each day I will be able to direct you to what pages in the workbooks to complete. I’m also sending home a child friendly scissors. I will be uploading some fine motor skills/cutting activities for the children to do. Children should be careful when using the scissors and only do so under adult supervision.

Reading: Continue with the word list from Story 4. Remember the first four words on the list (this, one, for, with) are sight words. They must be learnt off by heart and recognised by sight. For the remainder of the words try to use your knowledge of phonics to help you sound them out.

Comprehension & Writing: Log into folensonline.  If you don’t have an account you can set one up by following the steps below:

  • Go to the folensonline website and click register
  • Select Teacher
  • Fill in a username, email and password
  • For a roll number use the code: Prim20

If you have already made an account, simply sign in. Type Starlight Junior Infants in the search bar. Click on resources. Click on unit 12. The Duck Pond. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Big Book 4- Rocky and the Swan. Discuss the cover of the book and encourage your child to predict the storyline and identify prior knowledge. Ask questions, such as:

  • What do you see on the cover page?
  • Who is the author of this story?
  • Can you read the title?
  • Can you tell me anything you already know about farms/ducks/swans?
  • What do you think will happen in this story? Why?

On page 2 of 20 in the interactive book you will see the title alongside a picture of a swan. Ask your child to describe the swan. E.g. He is white. He has a long neck. He has an orange beak. He can flap his wings. He is beautiful. Make a note of the sentences that your child says as these will be used in the writing activity at the end. Press play and let your child listen to the story. You can pause the story at different times to allow your child to make predictions about what might happen next. Point out some of the difficult vocabulary to your child and ensure that they understand the meaning- splashed, stretched, plump, waddled, gobbled, hissed, flapped, eventually, excitedly. Draw attention to what’s happening in the pictures to aid comprehension and concentration. The aim of this activity is to model reading for children and instil interest in the storyline. By all means if they’d like to join in and help read the story that’s great, but I’m not expecting anyone to read the story from start to finish.

After reading I’d like you to write 3 sentences in your copy about the swan. You can use the sentences you used when describing the swan above. Ask mum or dad to write the sentences on a piece of paper and you can copy it into your copybook. Draw a nice picture of the swan at the top of the page to finish.

Maths: Once you all have your Planet Maths workbooks I will be assigning pages for you to do. Today I’d like you to look at the page I’ve attached below. Count the spring objects and write the correct number in the box. If you don’t have a printer you can write the answers in your copybook. I’ll attach a number line below also so you can pay attention to number formation. Use it to check that you are writing your numbers correctly.

SPHE: Finish off today with a few minutes of mindfulness. Go to GoNoodle and choose one of the ‘breathe’ or ‘stretch’ videos. You may need to set up a free account if you don’t already have one. ‘Surfer Dude’ is a nice video which I think you might enjoy. You can search it in the search bar at the top of the page.
